Sports Results - Week 9

A round-up of sports results from week 9 of the Lent Term by Mr Lawes, Head of Sport.

Football

1st XI v Wells – Won 6-2
The team bounced back in style with a 6-2 victory over Wells despite conceding early. They managed to get an equaliser before half time before dominating the second half. Confidence ran through the team and Man of the Match Cesare scored 5 goals, 3 were worthy of the premier league. Lucchino scored the other. A great performance.

Cross Country

The Cross Country Team continues to grow in confidence and stature. On Thursday the team competed in the Bryanston Relays. There were some excellent individual performances from Ella, Ally and Rob. Then on Saturday Ella S and Ella C ran well individually in the Sherborne Trophy and Rob, Hugo, Joel  and Freddie put in a good team performance. Ralph came third in the individual. Well done to the team.

Swimming

The swim squad competed in the Canford Swimming Gala. Cameron gave a winning performance in the Individual Medley with a time that beat many of the senior swimmers at the event.  A strong senior squad, including Stephen, John, Emre, Roo and Vasily finished second with Emre breaking yet another school record.

Netball

1st VII v Leweston – Lost 7-23
The 1st team played really well against Leweston. Great play within the centre third by Meg kept the ball moving. Poppy had some great goals and Carla was aggressive in defence. Well done girls!

2nd VII v Bryanston – Won 27-18
2nd VII v Leweston – Won 5-9
The 2nd team had a great week beating both Bryanston U16s and Leweston. MVPs against Bryanston were Violet for her determination and Estella for her outstanding performance.  It was also an excellent team performance against Leweston with great movement down the court. There was some amazing play by Annie, Tabs and Tilly.

U15 v Leweston – Lost 14-23
Violet and Aly fired from the off and with great support MA went into the last 2 quarters only 3 goals down. Some great work in the centre allowed MA to begin a comeback but Leweston’s shooters only missed 4 shots all day and this proved to be the difference. Well done girls, keep up the hard work.

Hockey

1stXI v Warmister – Lost 5-0
It was to be a game of two halves for the Abbey. Warminster started much stronger and were 5-0 up at the break. Mr Drewitt and Mr Barnes gave a powerful half time talk and a different team came out for the second half. MVPs Bug and Sam combined well to force some good saves. A very solid second half performance that ended 0-0.

2ndXI v Warminster – Won 4-2
For the first time this season the team were ‘out of the starting blocks’ straight away. Charlie T-G scored in the first minute of the game. At half time the score was level at one all. In the second half Piers took the lead again before George and Ed ensured victory.

U15s V Warminster – Lost 3-0
It was a great game of hockey and there was not much between the teams. MA players worked incredibly hard and should be pleased with their efforts. Ultimately Warminster had a little more skill in front of goal. George, Tom and Will had exceptional games. There were lots of positives to take away from the match.

Cycling

The cycling season began with the first event of the season. Lots of standing water, cross-winds and road debris made for a true 'spring classic'. Despite this Cameron, Jack and Tom worked extremely well together taking turns into the wind and over the climbs. This resulted in all three competing the course in a gold medal time - another impressive ride.
