Hello and thank you for visiting our website. I am incredibly grateful to be the 10th Headmaster of Milton Abbey School. Founded as a place of worship and learning by King Athelstan in 934 AD, Milton Abbey has a remarkable heritage that continues to inspire our purpose today.

 

The modern school was established in 1954 by a group of visionary educators who believed that schools should offer more than academic qualifications alone. In the aftermath of two World Wars, they sought to develop young people of character, combining scholarship and sport with leadership, creativity, service and an appreciation of the natural world. They called this philosophy ‘character education’.

 

Milton Abbey School was supported by five leading British companies including Rolls-Royce and the John Lewis Partnership. They shared the belief that education should prepare young people not only for university, but for meaningful careers and for rewarding lives.

 

Today, those ideals remain at the heart of our school. Set within one of England’s most beautiful campuses, we encourage every pupil to achieve academically while developing confidence, resilience and integrity. A fantastic day of sport as we welcomed @canfordschool for two home fixtures, Hockey and Golf! 🏑⛳️ Our U15A hockey team played brilliantly as a unit, showing great teamwork and determination throughout. Particularly impressive was the number of students who were playing hockey for the first time, making their performance all the more commendable. Flea B, Rosie W and Carmen LG were standout players on the day. In the golf, Milton Abbey narrowly lost out to Canford, but there were plenty of positives to take from the match. Lower Sixth students, Graeme H, and Ben V, were the pick of our players, with the match played in great spirit and in beautiful conditions on our nine-hole course. To celebrate International Day of Peace, students from The Globe, one of our Round Square activities, have been marking the day through creativity and reflection. As part of the initiative, students delivered a thought-provoking sermon written by Juanita S-M, Middle Sixth, Rachel K, Lower Sixth and Rahel K, Lower Sixth, exploring the importance of peace within our community and across the wider world. Students also shared musical performances, including an organ performance by Alex M, Middle Sixth. Alizé EK, Nadiia S, Lucy T and Ottilie G, Fourth Form, also contributed a powerful original poem reflecting on hope, understanding and unity. Our Third Form students enjoyed a fascinating history trip to the Bovington Tank Museum, further developing their knowledge and understanding of the First World War, a key topic in this year’s curriculum. The day began with an introduction to recruitment and propaganda before students stepped into a recreation of a First World War trench. They gained a deeper insight into the challenging conditions faced by soldiers on the Western Front and had the opportunity to handle equipment used and worn by troops during the conflict. Students also explored the technological advancements that shaped the war, including the chance to step inside a Mark IV Tank, an experience enjoyed by all. The visit concluded with a fascinating workshop on medicine, where students discovered the significant medical developments that emerged during the First World War. Our first Design and Technology project for Third Form is a hands-on introduction that gives students the opportunity to explore the workshop, materials, processes and safety procedures, while developing their skills in the correct use of hand tools. 🪵 The Project: A Wooden Box Throughout the project, students are developing practical skills including: • Measuring and marking accurately • Using a try square • Cutting with a tenon saw and coping saw • Using the belt sander safely and effectively • Exploring design research and developing their own ideas • An introduction to CAD and laser cutting The finished boxes will feature comb joints, a laser-etched design on the lid, and a final finish using decorative oil. Mr Power takes on his first half marathon! 🏃 On Sunday 11 October, Mr Power, Teacher of Design & Technology, will take on the Bournemouth Half Marathon, a challenging 13.1 miles and a distance he’s never run before. He’s taking on the challenge to support his nephew Coby, who is raising funds for his 2027 Camp Borneo expedition, where he’ll spend four weeks supporting local communities and conservation projects. Third Form musicians Clara B and Joni B enjoyed taking their music lesson to the Abbey, where they had the wonderful opportunity to play the organ! They both thoroughly enjoyed experimenting with a section of Bach’s famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor, discovering the unique sound and character of this magnificent instrument.
