Athelstan's Adventure Weekend

Cornwall, Camping, BBQs, Surfing and Beach Cricket....what more could the Athelstan boys ask for on the inaugural Athelstan Adventure weekend?  Athelstan Housemaster Will Fraser reports.....

On arrival at the idyllic Retorrick Mill Campsite in Mawgan Porth, we were directed to the field that would become our home for the next 48 hours. The boys quickly set about making camp, and working out the lay of the land. A delicious BBQ was followed by a visit to camp headquarters where the boys were met by the less than dulcet tones of a local punk band. I'm not sure if I have ever seen a group of 'cool' teenagers look quite so far out of their comfort zones!

Understandably, a number of the boys were a little dubious about the merits of entering the Atlantic swell on a wet and windy Sunday morning. Luckily all fears quickly subsided as hilarious surf instructor Pete and his crew from Kingsurf put the boys through their paces on the beach. They were soon carving up the waves like old pros, and having a ball at the same time. It was much harder getting them out of the water than it had been getting them in.

After a monster Sunday roast at the local pub, the afternoon was spent playing beach games and eating ice cream.  We returned to the campsite for some 'chill out' time - this was a surfing holiday after all. In the evening we had an amazing meal at Scott and Bab's restaurant before an awards ceremony around the campfire.

There was time for one more surf on Monday morning. This time we were blessed with glassy water, perfect waves and sunshine. Miss Fenwick showed the boys how it is really done and what practice makes! A mountain of Cornish pasties was just what was needed to prepare for the journey back. Happy days!  Thank you very much to Mr Barnes, Mr Lawes, Mr Hill, Mrs Fraser and especially Miss Fenwick for giving up their time so that the boys could enjoy this wonderful opportunity.
