Another successful Prep School Debating Competition!

Last Friday Milton Abbey hosted our annual Prep School Debating Competition with ten schools attending including Forres Sandle Manor, Sandroyd, Hanford, Castle Court, Dumpton, Farleigh, Knighton House, Salisbury Cathedral and Sherborne Prep.

The first part of the afternoon was spent in a workshop with the teams preparing their arguments from research material produced for them by Milton Abbey on a range of debating topics, from whether the use of performance enhancing drugs harms the spirit of sport to the benefits or otherwise of building on the Green Belt, factory farming, social media and more.

The debates followed with the teams performing on the stage of the New Barn Theatre under the careful eye of Dr Josh Bradbury who was adjudicating.  All the pupils really impressed with their ability to access, synthesise and deliver and considerable amount of complex material under tight time restraints.

The winners were Sherborne Prep who presented their ideas clearly and used many of the rhetorical techniques that were discussed earlier in the afternoon at the workshop.  Special mentions should also go to runners-up Forres Sandle Manor and to Salisbury Cathedral.  Well done to everyone and see you next year!
