Third Form is a great time to hone your skills in subjects you have learnt before and to try some new ones. We offer a deliberately varied selection of subjects, both as core and electives, designed to appeal to a variety of interests and prior learning, to set students up for positivity for their Fourth Form studies.

The Third Form Adventure Programme at Milton Abbey School offers a comprehensive series of outdoor and skill-based activities designed to build confidence, resilience, teamwork, and leadership. Students engage in a wide range of experiences, including coasteering, kayaking, map reading, navigation, climbing, shelter building, survival skills, and cooking.

A strong focus is placed on preparation for and completion of the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award, with key training in expedition planning, compass skills, lifesaving, and camping. The programme supports personal growth through both individual challenges and team-building exercises, helping students develop vital life and outdoor skills in a supportive environment.

Students learn how to develop ideas for, plan and implement a project. This will be completed as a collaborative enterprise in which they consider all aspects of a project plan from scope, through budget and timeline.

They will conduct thorough and informative research, identify essential resources and review and evaluate key milestones.

When the project is completed they will present their ideas and findings to the Senior Leadership Team. These members will provide supportive feedback and appraisal.

The purpose of this programme is not only to develop teamwork and public speaking through presentation, but also the digital necessary to support them in their education journey.

Once your place has been accepted, you will be assigned a Boarding House. We have three boy Houses (Tregonwell, Athelstan and Hambro) and two girl Houses (Damer and Hughie’s). Students in Third Form will share with roommates in the Lower School.

Each House has a Matron, who works throughout the day. Their contact details can be found on the school website and in each House information sheet. Matrons play a key role in pupils’ lives at Milton Abbey and can be relied upon for support, practical and otherwise.  

All day pupils are part of a Boarding House and are allocated a desk and storage space within a dormitory.

Learning Development is key to our whole school approach of knowing each student and how they learn best.

We go beyond just supporting our students: we upskill them by teaching them how to develop in every aspect of the learning process. Throughout the school, we focus on soft skills such as confidence, self-esteem and motivation; hard skills such as course content, factual information and analytical skills; and executive function skills such as planning, organisation and attention skills.

On entry, we get to know every student by seeing them across all the different aspects of life at Milton Abbey; from breakfast routines to a Mathematics lesson; from Chapel to sports.

As we gather information, notes are added to a ‘Pupil Profile’, so all teachers and staff have a thorough understanding of individual needs. Most importantly, strategies are continually added to these ‘Pupil Profiles’ so that teaching and learning is delivered in a way that suits the student.
