School Farm & Stables
Beyond the Classroom
Set within the School’s beautiful grounds are the School Farm and Stables – special features of our stunning countryside location.
THE FARM
The farm, as well as being resident to a variety of animals including Oswald the Alpaca, Amber and Lexi the Shetland ponies, horses, sheep, goats, pigs, and chickens, also acts as a hub for pupils studying our various relevant courses including Level 2 and Level 3 BTEC Equine and Countryside Management courses, giving them the opportunity for hands-on experience.
The farm’s enterprising element sees its produce sold to the school community, with proceeds reinvested for the purchasing of feed, livestock and equipment. Students from across the school can take part in farm activities, whether or not they study land-based courses, as part of the weekly activities programme.
THE STABLES
All Milton Abbey pupils are welcome to bring their ponies or horses to School on an assisted livery basis, particularly Sixth Formers who are studying Level 3 horse management courses.
Pupils have the option to look after their horses each day, with assistance from the School where required, or can take advantage of a full livery option.
The School has its own cross-country schooling area, a grass show-jumping arena, an all-weather canter track and a horse walker. Riding lessons are given at a nearby arena, delivered by our on-site qualified instructor. There is also excellent off-road hacking available directly from the school site. There is also the opportunity for students who don’t stable their own horse to take part in off-site riding lessons as part of the weekly activities programme.
Pupils can compete in local unaffiliated and national affiliated events, as well as interschool competitions. Polo is another popular equine activity, with a keen group of pupils regularly attending lessons at Druids Lodge Polo Club, playing matches against other schools and universities.
