Round Square
Beyond the Classroom
Founded in 1956, Round Square is a not-for-profit organisation which facilitates a network of 150 member schools in 40 countries. Round Square’s work is based on protecting our world’s future and supporting its variety of communities and cultures, enabling them to thrive and prosper.
ROUND SQUARE
Round Square offers its member schools a respected framework for excellence and continuous improvement, along with opportunities to collaborate and share experiences with like-minded schools across the world.
This framework centres around the Round Square IDEALS. These key principles which are integrated into the daily life of Milton Abbey and all member schools:
- Internationalism
- Democracy
- Environment
- Adventure
- Leadership
- Service
Collaborative initiatives which member schools can participate in include service projects that give pupils the opportunity to work as volunteers on community projects abroad, student and teacher visits and exchanges, student-led conferences, and various professional development opportunities for staff.
Involvement in Round Square helps prepare pupils for adult life, encouraging them to embrace different cultures and form a deep and long-lasting understanding and appreciation.
Every Friday afternoon, time is given for students to pursue endeavours that allow them to develop themselves within the key principles. Options range from volunteering at local retirement homes and community initiatives, being part of the school’s Combined Cadet Force, as well as learning new skills such as skills to benefit recyclable fashion.
ROUND SQUARE AFTERNOONS
Each Wednesday, every pupil is involved in our Round Square Activities afternoons. This varied programme of service, voluntary and community-based activities complements our membership of the Round Square network of schools.
The Third Form (Year 9) take part in a carousel of activities and events that focus on life skills; covering charity work, study skills, woodland activities, beach and countryside clean-ups, and team-building exercises.
Pupils can choose to join the Combined Cadet Force (CCF), which is partly funded by the Ministry of Defence and is aimed at developing leadership and military skills. Everyone joining the School tries the CCF for their first few weeks, with many continuing as a Cadet into the Sixth Form, where they have the opportunity to become junior instructors and gain professionally-recognised leadership qualifications.
