Sports Reports: Week 6

A round-up of the sports results for week 6 of the Michaelmas Term, by Mr Lawes, Director of Sport.

Rugby

The 1st XV lost 21-15 after conceding in the last play of the game against Wells Cathedral. It was a spectacular contest in which Milton Abbey scored two exceptional second half tries through Josh and Stephen to draw ourselves level, only to fall at the very final hurdle. However, it has been a good half of term with a great bunch of boys but there is a lot to work on following the break.

2nd XV lost 31 – 15 to a well organised Wells Cathedral side. MA were missing a number of players and with fewer subs than in previous matches had difficulty sustaining their effort over 80 minutes. Archie, Sam and Louis scored our tries but several others including James and Lucca had good games.

The U15s travelled to Wells and strong running from Sam, Dan, Gabriel and Max ensured a quick start. Milton Abbey played some great rugby and ran out 27-0 winners and the U15s march on still unbeaten.

The U14s were involved in a hard fought match. At half time the score was even at 14 all. However injuries to Josh and George and a huge mental breakdown within the team allowed Wells to dominate and win 41-21. Milton Abbey showed excellent physical attributes but were found wanting in the mental battle. Man of the Match was Keiichiro.

Hockey

The 1st XI suffered their first defeat of the season at home to Sexey’s.  It was a frustrating game for MA as we had the majority of possession but could not find the back of the net. Sexey’s took advantage of our attack minded approach to score 2 goals on the counter attack. The score finished 2-0.  Becca had a great game in midfield.

Swimming

Last Thursday, Milton Abbey swim squad competed in the Sherborne Gala. The senior squad was particularly strong with Stephen, Emre, John, Roo and Ralph. The junior squad also showed promise, with star performances from Bryn and Cameron.  MA came second overall beating both Sherborne and Canford. With the elite training, Milton Abbey swimmers have the potential to become really formidable competitors.

Sailing

On Saturday Afternoon the MA sailing squad had a match against Clayesmore.  Lucas sailed extremely well to win the event. A mention must also go to Harry who managed to secure a 2nd place and also to Ruby who finished in fourth position. Well done.

Golf

Congratulations to Jake Taylor who is the first pupil to receive an official handicap whilst at the School now that the golf course can officially hold handicaps.  His handicap is 21 and allows him to enter competitions.
