Countryside Management pupils help with lambing

Countryside Management pupils spent the day at Kingston Maurward College on Sunday 26th February helping in their lambing sheds.

This was a great opportunity to broaden their land management experience. It was particularly useful for those looking at farm management as a career option, but also for those who are considering broader estate management or land agency. The pupils gained practical experience of sheep husbandry and learnt about the management of the farm and commercial considerations.

The group had an early start for a Sunday and were on the bus by 7am. At the farm lambing was well underway; there were lines of pens with ewes and their lambs which were less than 24 hours old.  Slightly older lambs were with the ewes in larger pens before being put out in the field when 48 hours old.  Other large pens housed ewes waiting to lamb and pupils kept an eye out for those showing signs of lambing and checked the ewes were not in distress. We saw lambs being born and we helped feed some of the weaker lambs, doing some bottle feeding as well as helping straw-up the pens and barn areas and organise the correct food rations for the various areas. The pupils did an excellent job working effectively as a team and have been invited back. Next time they’ll be helping with the dairy!
