Sailing: Milton Abbey v Sherborne

After one of the coldest and wettest starts to any sailing season at MA with exceptionally windy conditions, both the racing squads were back on the water for the first time last Thursday. This Thursday saw the first match of the summer series against Sherborne.

Cool frostbite conditions prevailed with very light winds. In the first race Sherborne had the first three boats over the line in both classes but in the second race both our seniors and juniors had come back effectively.

Tennis: Milton Abbey v Clayesmore

Milton Abbey took on Clayesmore in the first boys’ Tennis match of the season, with mixed results. The Juniors  produced a star performance that resulted in a complete whitewash of the opposition.  All 3 pairs played well together with total cotrol of both the baseline and the net.

1st Pair             Chap/Ellis

2nd Pair            Blair/Ferguson

3rd Pair             Ferreiro/Roca

Won 9 - 0

The Seniors put up a sterling performance, taking a high number of games off the opposition, but were outplayed by some excellent tennis from Clayesmore, particularly their young 1st Pair.  This does not detract from some excellent and inteligent play particularly at the net.  The baseline game still needs more practice.

1st Pair             Amphlett/Stopford

2nd Pair            Braxton/Windsor-Clive

3rd Pair             Thorold/Thornton

Lost 1 - 7

Tennis: Girls' v Bryanston

Heavy rain clouds overhead and windy conditions made controlling the ball difficult which was not helped by none of the girls having played with their partners before and a school trip clashing with the match! However, Phoebe Unwin and Hattie Middleton-Frith played well together and managed to win their three matches easily – 6-2,6-4,6-1. Izzy Wintour and Charlotte Cripps beat their opposite pair 6-4, losing to the first and third pair whilst Alice Cheater and LydiaEdwards struggled to win a match. The final result was a win to Bryanston 5 games to 4.

Hockey:  U14 XI v Ryde

This was the strongest Ryde team we had ever met and it was no surprise to learn that they had not lost a game all season.  The team was never allowed to settle on the ball and were forced to defend for most of the match with our Goalkeeper Sergio making his usual quota of fine saves to avoid a double figure defeat. Overall, a match best forgotten but hopefully the team can bounce back on Tuesday and win their final match of the season.

Hockey: Ist XI v Hampshire Collegiate School

Whilst we were rather obviously the better side, Milton Abbey made heavy weather with several players looking rather tired from the start. We gave acres of space to the opposition and gave too many slack passes away at vital moments. Gradually the players made the ball do the work and Angus Morton held the ball brilliantly at vital moments. His rasping shot to open the scoring was soon balanced by a goal from HCS. His slight touch in the last ten minutes, to score a second, was almost the end we thought, but HCS rallied and struck the woodwork twice and missed an open goal. Luck favoured us and deserted HCS whereas a draw was probably more realistic.

Hockey: U14 v Thomas Hardye

It was good to return to winning ways after three defeats since half term.  The opposition had brought in a few better players since our 5-1 victory on their Astro in January.  An early goal from Vincent Ruppert settled our nerves after he pounced upon a goalkeeping error.  In fairness, he then made a series of fine saves to thwart several Milton Abbey shots on goal.  Hardye’s had a few skilful players and created several good chances but our defence held firm with Hugo Rossi in particular making a number of timely clearances.  Archie Macdonald – Buchanan also deserves to be singled out because he has changed from a B side centre forward in January into an A team left back and looked increasingly confident in possession.

The match was finally settled by another unstoppable shot from Ed Barrington who was Captain for the day due to an injury to Ben Warburton.  James Khan took his position just in front of the back three and also worked tirelessly.

Overall, a good match played with impeccable sportsmanship and we look forward to the challenging match at Ryde on Saturday.

Lacrosse: v Canford, Sherborne Girls’ and Bryanston

This was our first time playing tournament lacrosse and was incredibly valuable as a learning experience. Decisions have to be made fast, every goal counts, there is no half-time talk and little recovery time between games. The girls accounted for themselves brilliantly, playing teams with more experience and better stick skills but made huge efforts to chase loose balls and mark back, despite being on the back foot for most of the game time.

Sophie Eaton in goal made some valiant saves, Emily Pope in midfield did a fantastic job switching from attack to defence, with Phoebe Unwin putting our two goals into the back of the net. Molly Bartlett and Emma Anderson  made some good runs in attack whilst Ellen Hosford and and Izzy Wintour defended well in our half. Overall, a really positive effort from all the girls. Well done.

Hockey: U14 XI v Ballard School

This was the first fixture ever against Ballard and should not be the last as the game proved to be hard fought but played in the right spirit.  It was a pleasure to play on an Astro that was only a few months old and an absolutely perfect surface.  It soon became apparent that the opposition were physically imposing but also skilful and we were generally under pressure for much of the first half and conceded two goals from short corners.  However, a breakaway move led by Ed Barrington resulted in a short corner from which Ed Doggrell scored.

Early in the second half a magnificent run by Archie Kevill followed by a skilful flick over the goalkeeper from a tight angle levelled the match at 2-2.  However, this seemed to galvanise Ballard into action and they laid siege to our goal.  Ben Warburton and George Chitty worked tirelessly in the centre of defence to break up the attacks but eventually the opposition scored two quick goals with ten minutes remaining.  Our goalkeeper Sergio continued to make some great saves including a deliberate headed clearance – a purely instinctive reaction by a Spaniard who is an excellent footballer but had never played hockey until two months ago!    I have never seen that done in 20 years of umpiring matches at Milton Abbey!

So overall a pleasing performance against a strong side and the team remain in good spirits as they approach the final three matches of the season.

Hockey: U15 XI v QE Wimborne

It was a slow start for the boys as our heads were not in the game to begin with. With a little encouragement the boys managed to string a succession of passes together to get the first goal through S. Kurtser shortly followed by a second to make it a double for the young man . In the second half it was like watching a completely different team with great passing and movement on and off the ball resulted in a hat-trick by T. Chapel.

Hockey: 1st XI v Clayesmore

Milton Abbey did not play at the best against probably the weakest side they have encountered this season. Milton Abbey did not compete sufficiently for loose balls and looked far from fresh. Slack marking allowed Clayesmore to have scoring opportunities that they converted, whereas ours, with the tired approach, simply did not register. Gradually, however, a more direct approach, with more genuine running, began to have an effect. Angus Morton felt hard done by not obtaining a Penalty stroke after a dubious challenge, and then Dom Barrington was clearly penalised in the act of taking a shot: Jonty Ellis scored from this penalty. Immediately afterwards Dom Barrington rifled home a penalty corner to show the team exactly how the match should have proceeded from the start.

Hockey: U15B XI v Clayesmore

After an injury crisis in the A’s the boys did well to field a full side. Special mention for this must go to the non-hockey players who helped out; Hugo Knight who coped very well at left back, Marcello Fantoni who played the first half at Centre Half, Joe De Roeper who was up front and Alistair Soubra who played Centre Back.  The boys were out gunned on the day but never gave up the fight; playing some of the best hockey of the season in the last 15 minutes of the game.  Hector Raw linked well with Manuel Llado on the left and Arnold Tchum brought his own special style in defence  Toby Wainwright cleared his lines well and Dare Adeosun tackled well.

Hockey: U14A XI v Clayesmore

The team faced by far the strongest team of the term: Clayesmore had beaten both Sherborne and Canford A teams.  They scored 6 superb goals in the first half although Ed Barrington scored 2 goals, the second of which was the best individual effort I have ever seen by a Milton Abbey boy at this level in 20 years as he dribbled from the half way line and beat 5 players before hitting an unstoppable shot in the far corner. In the second half Clayesmore only scored one more goal because our goalkeeper Sergio Puyol made a string of excellent saves.

Hockey: U14B XI v Clayesmore

Due to injuries, the team was made up of the only 11 members left in the 3rd form who were fit.  Quite a contrast with Clayesmore who as their coach said “could field a reasonable D team”!  The team never gave up against a very skilful opposition and Archie Macdonald Buchannan worked tirelessly in the heart of defence to break up many opposition attacks.  Our goalkeeper Charles Nainby- Luxmoore also made a number of fines saves.

Mixed Lacrosse v Thomas Hardye School

This was a first for Milton Abbey – a friendly mixed game against another school. Miss Cassidy, in her role as an American Lacrosse School Coaching Officer at Milton Abbey has been coaching Thomas Hardye students in an after school club since last September.

Playing from a squad of 10, we had teams of 3 boys and 4 girls on the pitch at any one time and during the first quarter insisted on a no tackling rule. At quarter time we were 3-6 down but with the introduction of tackling had managed to gain more possession, even though we were still trailing 6-9 at half time.

The team began to work hard together getting more and more confident with their throwing and catching and determination to be first onto the loose ground balls. We eased ourselves ahead with some great fast breaks only for Thomas Hardye to come back at us. It was neck and neck until the last few seconds, when we just managed to clinch the lead to win 14-13.

The top goal scorer was Ben Doggrell with Sophie Eaton, Molly Bartlett, Ollie Fox and Charlie Williams all adding to the scoreboard. The rest of the team comprised Alice Cheater, Fran Barron, Alex Ferguson, Hen Cholmley and Vicky Fraser. We are looking forward to our next mixed game in a couple of weeks time.

Hockey: 3rdXI v Bryanston

The thirds lost 7-1 to Bryanston U16’sB team, away.  We were outplayed but  our consolation goal by Henry Leschallas was well deserved, as we put up a brave fight.

Hockey: U14A v Sherborne

This was a closely fought match against a skilful side.  Sherborne had the best chances in the first half but some fine saves from Sergio kept us in the match and we scored after 15 minutes against the run of play.  However, our defence could not hold out forever and before long we found ourselves trailing 2-1.  However, with just 5 minutes to go a lovely pass from Archie Kevill on the right wing was seized on by Ed Barrington who hit a great shot past their keeper.  George Chitty and Ben Warburton deserve particular praise for their dogged defence and we just held on for a draw.  This is the first time Sherborne have failed to beat us at this level for 15 years so the result feels like a victory!

Hockey: U14B v Sherborne

The B team played with spirit but were always struggling against a skilful opposition.  Ryan Parker worked particularly hard in both midfield and attack but the result was probably a fair reflection of the balance of play.

THURSAY, 26th JANUARY, 2012

Hockey: 1st XI v Sherborne

With several changes due to illness and school events, the team was greatly reduced from the full side. As is typical of the long run of matches against Sherborne, this was an exciting and a really tough competitive match against a larger squad. Rory Edwards was promoted to the side following the absence of George Lee, Will Hagenbuch and Jonty Ellis whilst very sadly Charlie Barron suffered injury in the first phase of the match and literally had to walk the game. Sherborne scored three times in the first 15 minutes but the third goal marked a remarkable come back. Whereas the Sherborne players were well drilled in the ‘transfer’ technique – moving the ball from side to side to disrupt the defence – Milton Abbey through Angus Morton and Dom Barrington played through the middle taking on players and had several raids on Sherborne who looked increasingly ill at ease. The work rate of Angus and Dom was outstanding and easily earned them the shared man of the Match Award – perhaps one of the best seen for a decade. Will Stogdale scored  whereas at the back Tom Ellis denied Sherborne three times so that for much of the second half we effectively dominated the game. A final slightly soft goal for Sherborne certainly did not reflect the even match.

Hockey: 2nd XI v Sherborne

After a dramatic start (1-0 after only 10 seconds), the boys reacted well and scored a goal after 15 minutes of constant pressure on the opposition’s defence.  The score of 1-1 seemed a fair result at half time.  Unfortunately, Sherborne played a magnificent and quick hockey and scored a few more goals in the second half.  Milton Abbey managed to squeeze one more goal in the last seconds of the game.

Hockey: 3rd XI v Sherborne

Unfortunately we faced a very strong Sherborne side, with what was a make-shift Milton Abbey team. Injuries, illness and call ups to the 2nd XI left the skeleton of a former 3rd XI. We found ourselves 8-0 down at half time. However, a strong second half saw Abbey snatch a couple of goals to win the half 2-1. Alex Donne, our stand-in goalie had a torrid first half, but put in a very impressive second half, and thoroughly deserved the man of the match award for standing in at the last moment.

Hockey: U14 XI v Bryanston

The team expected  a tough match given that  Bryanston had beaten Warminster 6-0 and they had inflicted our only defeat of the season.  We set our team out in a defensive manner but it quickly became apparent that we were an even match.  The scoreline flattered us but the key point was that we took our chances and Bryanston did not.  Ed Barrington continued his scoring streak and set us on our way with a superb individual goal after 15 minutes. However, special mention must go to Sergio Pujol who stepped in as goalkeeper owing to an injury to our regular keeper Charles Nainby – Luxmore and produced a string of fine saves.  It was wonderful to witness such all round determination and willingness to work for each other and the team can feel proud to have beaten Bryanston at hockey for the first time in 12 years!

Hockey: U14 XI v Thomas Hardye

The team travelled to Dorchester on Tuesday and recorded a terrific win.  Ed Barrington scored a hat trick after just 9 minutes of the match – surely one of the fastest in Milton Abbey history?!  Hardye’s pulled a goal back before half time but Ed scored his fourth goal early in the second half and the victory was rounded off with a goal from a well worked short corner by Archie Kevill.

Hockey: 1st XI v Warminster

This was going to be a good test of players’ ability to bounce back after the previous match. Tom Ellis, elevated from the 5th year to become only the fourth keeper in 25 years to hold a place in the Ist XI, had a very quiet game for although Warminster raided our D on quite a few occasions, they did not put in the final shot. Two Somerset HUA umpires controlled the match allowing for staff to enjoy the dug-out out of the very fresh cold wind, and this allowed major player changes as the game progressed, rotating players as their particular strengths and weaknesses on the day were revealed. In addition, the modern game is quick and even quicker with the self hit introduced last year: no game is the same as the next. Strong running from all players allowed more midfield control, and higher fitness was evident. Will Stogdale opened the scoring, followed by an easy push in from Will Hagenbuch.

At the break our team was warned against complacency and slack defensive positioning: the second half saw no let up in work rate therefore. Four players were repositioned and reserves George Lee and Anthony Bentley Buckle rotated at left wing. Will Stogdale scored a second but the best shot was Dom Barrington’s volley from the edge of the D, picked up, flicked up and driven cricket style. Henry Stoot,  being given some experience of the busy life of a schoolmaster, relished the chance to give of his expertise following his former Sherborne goalkeeping role and County cap experience. Having enhanced Tom Ellis’s self belief (and other club keepers), and having massively assisted staff usually stuck in the umpiring role, he now looks forward to returning to Sherborne this Thursday.

Hockey: U14 XI v Warminster

This was another close fought match which could have gone either way.  It was disappointing to concede a goal just 2 minutes from the end but our goalkeeper Charles Nainby – Luxmore made a number of fine saves whereas our lack of composure in front of goal meant that their goalkeeper was rarely called into action.

Lacrosse: Milton Abbey v Canford

The girls’ first lacrosse fixture which was always going to be interesting as it was the first time they had played a full 12-a-side game,as well as a match.

They were immediately thrown into the deep end, finding it hard to keep up the stamina required to run up and down a long pitch, whilst trying to mark their opponents and struggling with their stick skills. Cradling and therefore stick protection are fundamental skills in lacrosse and working on this will be a priority. Many times we were first to a groundball but were easily tackled and lost possession.

The positives are that girls’ were on a steep learning curve and now know more of what to expectthis coming week against Bryanston; with a few more practices between now and then they can certainly get better. There was some promising play from newcomers to the game Ellen Hosford and Emily Pope, who scored our only goal.

Player of the match was awarded to Sophie Eaton, the Captain of the day, without whose great performance in goal, the score against us would have been considerably higher.

Hockey: 3rd XI v Thomas Hardys

Our first encounter of the term with Hardy’s was a spirited affair and was probably one of our best performances by the team in recent years  We were beaten by one goal to nil, which is a considerably better result than has been the case in recent times. The man of the match went to Sam Rhys whose formidable hitting and tackling kept Hardy’s at bay.   Our defence was outstanding  with Tom Ellis in goal, Andrew Rollo, Max Thornton, Callum Batten and Rupert Turnbull all playing enthusiastically.  Up front Henry Leschallas who captained the team, assisted by Oscar Evans, Tom Opperman and Alex Ferguson put together many an attack to harry the opposition defence.  The team has benefitted from Mark Phipps helping with the coaching and Henry Stoot helping with the goal keeping.

Hockey: 1st XI v Thomas Hardys

This was always going to be a tough game as the main task was getting used to the football style astro! We tried very hard and there were many positives – a little more running off the ball and an equally smart appearance too. Ben Doggrell easily confirmed his position  in the Ist XI but elsewhere this was a classic example of frustration getting the upper hand. Thomas Hardy played with an economy of effort and typically moved the ball rather than the player round the pitch: all their players were accomplished Weymouth Club players and for this reason our performance was thoroughly creditable. But frustration, after six unsuccessful raids into their ‘D’ (and three strikes to the side netting),  was always going to be the winner, and when we had two open goals, it was always going to be that the ideal shot would not happen. The main aspect was that the depth of ability is visible and we just need to use it against Warminster.

Hockey: 1st XI v Downside

This was an excellent start to the season for it was the first time this particular team had played together. Players worked hard against a spirited Downside attack but stuck to the basics even though the marking was a little ‘generous’ i.e. Downside were given more room to manoeuvre. At Half Time it was still 0 -0 and we upped the game in the second half. A fine shot from Angus Morton was rifled in and another Hagenbuch special hit the backboard. Unfortunately slack marking at the back allowed Downside to level the scores followed by a lucky deflection to lead 3-2. Milton Abbey looked distinctly unfit but the next match on Tuesday in Dorchester should help to improve that. Ed Fane Trefusis nobly filled the goal following the illness affecting Kyle Moore. Charlie Barron and Angus Morton both looked very comfortable and their stick skills look very positive. It was all very encouraging. Voted ‘Best innovation of the day’ was the Headmaster bringing warm tea to the relief of chilled staff and parents.

Hockey: 3rd XI v Canford

The team were 2-0 down after 15 minutes against a skilful opposition but they defended with great determination and when Joe Ranson scored a well worked goal early in the 2nd half, it looked like Milton Abbey might force at least a draw.  However, 2 goals in the last 2 minutes from Canford put paid to our hopes although overall it was an encouraging start to the season.

Man of the Match: Max Thornton for his terrific work rate and skilful touches.

Hockey: Under 14A's v Downside

A hard fought match looked like ending 0-0 after some terrific saves from our goalkeeper Charles Nainby-Luxmore but in the last minute in the fading light,  Centre Forward Ed Barrington seized on a loose ball and scored the winner from close range.  This was our first win at Under 14 level against Downside since the 1990’s and has got the season off to a flying start!

Man of the Match:  Captain Ed Doggrell for leading by example with tremendous effort and enthusiasm.

Hockey: Under 14B’s v Downside

The Under 14’s B side was playing at Downside School on a surface of Shale, which is a very fine type of pebble.  It meant playing was a bit agricultural, but undoubtedly less so than grass at this time of year. The only goal of the match was scored by Archie MacDonald Buchanan, who was ably supported by Freddie Burgoyne and Otto Williams.  The defence was indefatigable, led by Theo Stokes and the goal was kept formidably by Sergio Bujol. Man of the match:  Archie MacDonald Buchanan.

Girl's Hockey: Milton Abbey v Thomas Hardye

What a fantastic finish to a great season of hockey. In the pouring rain, under floodlights and on a very slow astro, it took us a little while to settle down but once we had got to grips with the surface we soon began to dominate the game.  Hattie Middleton-Frith scored the first goal with Emily Pope scoring two more by half-time. Thomas Hardye had some fast breaks which tested our backs but we were never really under threat and with Emily Pope scoring another goal to claim her hat-trick, we won the match 4-0. Emily was awarded Player of the Match.

Rugby: U16XV v Warminster

The game kicked off a shade after 1430 and Milton Abbey were definitely on top; controlling the pace of the game and asking questions in attack.  Unfortunately the boys were a little over eager and made several unforced errors in the early going, which led to moves breaking down.  The half would see only two tries, one from Warminster and an excellent try for Ben Doggrell after a strong run and offload in contact from Hamish Gardener.

Milton Abbey started the second half in a completely different gear; scoring from the restart after a sublime peace of play by the back line.  Harry Alderson broke the line and offloaded to Chris Wells who duly scored.  The pressure continued and Milton Abbey moved clear after Ed Fulford sagely opted for the points when the boys were awarded a penalty.  Henry Bishop then scored his first try of the season with an opportunistic dive on the ball after Warminster fumbled a lineout on their own five metre line.  The boys then began to truly dominate with some excellent passages of play, including darting runs from Henry Hughes and Harry Alderson.  Chris Wells once more found himself in space and scored and finally set up Danny Sala for a well-earned try.

This victory means that the U16XV have a record of played 8 Won four which considering some of the sides they have played is a record they should be proud of.  Myself and Mr Adams would like to say a big thank you to the boys for their efforts this season and wish them every success in senior rugby next year.

Girls Hockey: Milton Abbey v Clayesmore

Milton Abbey girls are on a roll having just won their third match in a row by beating Clayesmore.

The teams were evenly matched despite the fact that Clayesmore were fielding their first team goalie and both had opportunities to score in the first half, without success.

A tough team talk at half-time lifted the Abbey girls, who suddenly went up a couple of gears with two goals resulting from some good attacking play, one from Emily Pope  and a second  from Ellen Hosford.  Solid defence from Sophie Eaton as sweeper and Izzy Wintour,  also contributed to a great win. The final score was 2-0 to us – which means we have had no goals scored against us in our last 3 matches. There is a lot hanging on our final game against Thomas Hardye School next week!

Player of the match was awarded to Emma Anderson.

Football: Milton Abbey v Warminster

A previous defeat of 5-0 by Warminster meant the Milton abbey team were anxious to get on the pitch for revenge and to continue their unbeaten run this half term.  The conditions were wet and muddy, but the pitch was still very playable.  Milton Abbey were on top as soon as the whistle sounded for kick off and a well taken strike by Pepe from the edge of the box gave Milton Abbey an early lead.  After another 10 minutes of play, dominated by Milton Abbey, Anthony Bentley-Buckle side footed a shot past the Warminster keeper in to the top corner.  It was at this point Warminster were allowed back into the game gaining more possession and taking shots.  Going into half time at 2-0 was unnerving for the team, as they how unsafe the score was after coming back from being 2-0 down earlier in the season.  After a stern team talk from their caretaker manager they went back onto the pitch revitalised and took back control of the game.  Warminster never looked like scoring, Milton Abbey kept most of the possession and, thanks to Alejandro, Milton Abbey finished the game 3-0.  An impressive team mud slide followed the final whistle.  Man of the Match was a tough call between Ed Windsor-Clive and George Lee; due to his impressive defensive play always being followed up by simple attacking movement George Lee just wins the accolade.

An impressive progression of performance through the term, but how will they get on against the staff next Friday?

Football: Milton Abbey v Millfield

A very tight game with lots of end to end action but goalless at half time The second half saw Milton Abbey in the ascendency with improved performances from Joe Bain and Callum Batten. Milton Abbey nearly took the lead with a free kick which Joe Bain crashed against the post. Jean Philippe won the game for Milton Abbey in the last 3 minutes of the match with a well taken finish (1-0). Millfield piled on the pressure in the last minutes to try to force an equaliser but our defence proved too strong on the day.

Man of the Match: Callum Batten

Girls Hockey v King's Bruton

Another sterling performance from the Milton Abbey girls, winning 1-0. Player of the match goes to Hattie Middleton, who scored the only goal of the match. Can we make it three wins in a row -watch this space!

Football: Milton Abbey v Sherborne International

Fielding a younger side with many of the regular 1st team players missing Milton Abbey faced Sherborne International College at Sherborne on a dry but cold and windy day.  After a convincing win at Milton Abbey, Sherborne faced a determined, fresh and enthusiastic Milton Abbey.  Straight from the whistle we played with effort and commitment stealing an early goal stemming from a through ball from Alex Macauley to Charlie Williams, crossing it low and neatly placed in the net by Salomon Kurster.  The gutsy performance continued throughout the game, and with the wind behind us in the second half we dominated a tired Sherborne team.  A fantastic goal came from Alejandro Carnerero in his debut game accurately side footing the ball from outside of the box into the top of the net.  The new players had an excellent game and were well led by our more experienced regulars.  Man of the Match goes to Alejandro for his level headed approach to the match and a great goal.  The final score was a well-deserved 5-0 victory.

THURSDAY, 10th NOVEMBER, 2011

Football: 1st XI v Clayesmore

A scrappy game, which proved very evenly contested brought to life with a sublime goal scored by Joe Bain who hit the ball on the half volley into the top corner from all of 25 yards. Clayesmore then equalised 1-1 before half time through some sloppy defending.

Milton Abbey regained the lead with a well worked move down the right wing, started by Angus Moreton who passed the ball onto Jean Philippe Meersemann. He centred to Anthony Bentley Buckle who calmly slotted the ball home after an impressive first controlling touch in the box. Milton Abbey defended valiantly for the remainder of the game as Clayesmore desperately attacked our goal. Man of the Match went to Angus Moreton for his outstanding work rate.

Girls Hockey v Canford

This was the game where the girls suddenly looked like a real team and began to believe that they could win. Canford began with some good attacking play but hadn’t reckoned with the determined defence they would encounter in our ‘D’ as Sophie Eaton, Ellen Hosford and Izzy Wintour kept their cool and managed to keep the ball away from the goal. Added to this, Charlotte Cripps in goal, had a magnificent game, saving goals off three rebounds at one point and with both her feet and hands at others.  At half time the score was 0-0 with everything to play for.

In the second half Canford had 6 short corners which were all well defended, with the hard work in training reaping the benefit,  as the ball was seen off  with some particularly fine play by Emily Pope, who was taking no prisoners!  Our first goal was a cunning little sweep by Phoebe Unwin , the Captain, followed by a second from Alice Cheater.

The whole team should be congratulated by the way they played, supporting each other and never giving up. Player of the match was awarded to Charlotte Cripps.

Football: Milton Abbey v Canford

With a depleted team due to injury and illness we arrived at Canford to play their 1st team with the bare 11 players.  The boys were not confident of a good performance, but were determined to enjoy the game.  Straight from the whistle the work rate was 100% and they surprised themselves by actually being in charge of the game; they were relaxed but hungry for the ball, communication was good and some great football was being played.  Despite of tremendous effort Canford scored first, but the determined Abbey boys kept the pressure on and a frustrated Canford conceded a goal later on.  The final score of 1-1 was a deserved result following a well fought match; it was a pleasure to watch.  The whole team played extremely well but special mention must go to Man of the Match Alick Petit, for keeping us in the game with same superb shot stopping and catching, Pepe for scoring his first goal of the season and Charlie Williams for stepping in at the last minute to ensure we had a full team.

Rugby: 1st XV v Hampshire Collegiate School

Tough game with two teams of contrasting styles.  Hampshire where big up front, well drilled and wanted a clear game pattern.  Milton Abbey are more Gallic in their approach and in broken play continuously made the game line.  This was a game we could have won but was decided  unfortunately by a ‘sucker punch’ in the first half.  Milton Abbey were penalised in the opposition 22.  We all turned back to retreat.  Their right winger, used his initiative, put his hands on the ball, took a quick tap and galloped 60 metres to score under the post- a salutary message learnt by all.

Some great passages of play, particularly in the second half ensued and the ever consistent kicking of George Cotterell saw us take the lead with 10mins left on the clock.  Once they scored after a period of sustained pressure in the last few minutes, Milton Abbey roared back.  The skipper, Dominic Barrington raced over from and ensuing ruck to ‘splash down’ Chris Aston style to ‘nick it’ at the death.  The fairy tale finish was not a reality.  The ref’s whistle had blown for entering the ruck from the side.  The final whistle blew and although it was hard to take the defeat there was some really good improvement in key areas, but as ever plenty to work on.

Special mentions go to Oscar Evans, Charlie Homer and Evy Martin-Smith but on this occasion, according to the opposition coach, Man of the match was awarded to Orlando Bevan.

Golf: Milton Abbey v Canford

On Thursday November 3rd the team played a return fixture at Canford.  Instead of the usual 4 ball better ball format, we played 6 single matches.  We put up a great fight and only lost by 3 ½ to 2 ½ points.  Special mention should go to Will Blair and Sergio Pujol for winning their matches and also to our Captain Will Stogdale who halved his match.  None of the team had played on the course before so it was an even more impressive effort.  We look forward to trying to gain our revenge in the summer term.

Girls Hockey: Milton Abbey v Godolphin

Not exactly ideal conditions for hockey – heavy rain showers and dusk turning to really dark and so a game under floodlights!  A first for some of the team, who despite having more possession couldn’t find the goal and managed to let Godolphin put 4 shots past them in the first half. It was a game of two halves, in the second we were much more active but still need to work on passing the ball through the midfield area and trying to gain more options by going for the return pass. Fitness and confidence for some are still holding us back but we are improving and beginning to work more as a team. Alice Cheater scored a great goal whilst Molly Bartlett was awarded Player of the Match for her determined running throughout the game. The score ended 1-6 to Godolphin.

Football: 1st v Stanbridge Earls

Milton Abbey conceded within first 2 minutes and started like they were still in the changing rooms whilst Stanbridge had a number of chances to stretch their lead but were thwarted by some solid defending entering half time 1-0 to Stanbridge with Milton Abbey showing character to cling on.

Half time tactical changes to formation saw Milton Abbey take to the pitch rejuvenated and they began to dominate the game with several chances coming our way with Jean Philippe Meersemann and Anthony Bentley Buckle linking well. Joe Bain, Ewan Wright and Ed Windsor Clive became more influential as the game proceeded and in defence Josh Parry and Juan Jose Ferreiro were rock solid.

Milton Abbey's Anthony Bentley Buckle scored the equalising goal to end the game 1-1. Man of the match went to Juan Jose Ferreiro.

Rugby: U16 XV v St John's

Another hard fought physical game with both sides showing determination and playing some excellent rugby. St Johns scored first but failed to convert and when Milton Abbey responded through Danny Sala, it was Ed Fulford who captained the side well who converted the try.  Charlie Williams made some impressive runs but man of the match goes to Alex Macaulay for running the show in the backs, relieving pressure with his impressive boot and being instrumental in the try that decided the game.

Rugby: U15B XV v Clayesmore

Tackling is still the teams greatest weakness, however the Milton Abbey boys performed well against strong opposition with three defiant try saving tackles being made demonstrating the progress being made by the U15 team. Man of the Match goes to Alejandro Noves, with Cristobal Weiechert flanking him very closely for this award.

Football: 1st XI v Stanbridge Earls

A very close battle saw M.A win this game 1-0. Anthony Bentley Buckle scored the only goal of the game mid way through the first half as he latched on to a through ball and beat the advancing keeper. Stanbridge pressed hard for an equalizer and it has to be said, played the more attractive football. However, a determined and well disciplined defence kept the visitors at bay.

Men of the Match: Anthony Bentley Buckle, Josh Parry and Ewan Wright

Rugby: 1st XV v Wells

Another long trip and although it was 20mins walk from the school a great display by the forwards saw the first half Milton Abbey soaking up a lot of pressure.  Counter rucking was very good indeed but the final pass simply would not go to hand.  0:0 first half although it had been exciting.

During the second half and Milton Abbey piled on the pressure.  Simple line out, good back move quick ball on two occasions resulted in a penalty to Milton Abbey which George Cotterell slotted. Orlando Bevan and Oscar Evans stood out on the day with team defence meaning the result remained 3:0 and we deserved the victory.  Man of the match was Oscar Evans.

Rugby: U16 XV v Bryanston

An incredibly physical game where both sides played some impressive rugby.

Milton Abbey started well and scored twice with both tries capitalising on mistakes by the opposition but still requiring a clinical touch. Hamish Gardner scored first and Charlie Williams the second. Ed Fulford then converted what was to be a crucial two points.

Bryanston then fought back getting the lion’s share of possession and scoring two tries themselves. However, they missed both conversions and were unable to penetrate the Milton Abbey defence further. The boys hung on for over 10 minutes in their own 22. Stand out performances by Harry Alderson at centre turning over lots of ball and Chap, who played through the pain of a sprained ankle; but man of the match goes to Ben Doggrell for being at the bottom of nearly every ruck and turning over a staggering amount of ball.

Rugby: U14A XV v Wells

Milton Abbey started this game tackling low, hard and retaining possession. This possession enabled Hugo Hunt to run in a try from the half way line. Ben Warburton also crossed the line to make the score 10-0. Just before half time our visitors crossed the line. Unfortunately Wells scored again just after half time to take the lead. Despite determined effort to score Milton Abbey were unable to do so. Towards the end of the game fatigue on the part of Milton Abbey enabled Wells to cross the line twice more. Archie Neville stood out for his aggressive runs with the ball and some great tackles. Theo Stokes had his best game of the season so far.

Girls' Hockey v Bryanston

This was a game we took control of at the start, with Izzy Wintour scoring a goal for us very early in the match. Two shots followed from Bryanston and with a second for us by Alice Cheater, the score was 2-2 after the first 15 minutes. We kept the pressure up with some good defending and a great save from Charlotte Cripps but had narrowly slipped behind at half-time, with the score reading 2-4.

In the second half the score margin widened against us as Bryanston began to dominate and we struggled to maintain our defensive position. The score line ran away from us despite everyone giving their all right to the end and we lost 2-8. Izzy Wintour was named Player of the Match.

Rugby: U14A v Thomas Hardye

The U14 A team made improvements in their tackling from their previous game.  They showed huge effort an commitment in contact situations.  Of VERY special mention is Sergio Pujol Dalmau who made three massive try saving tackles, on players much bigger than he.  On each occasion his tackled bounced the opposition backwards.

Other players who tackled well and ran with the ball effectively were Ed Doggrell, E Barrington, Hugo Hunt and Ben Warburton. Such was the commitment to the contact zone that this left gaps in the back line for the opposition to score without being stopped.

Swimming: v Marlborough

The swimming team travelled to Marlborough on the last Thursday for a fixture against Marlborough School. There were six events for each of the Junior and Senior teams, with two competitors from each school in each event. The boys swam extremely well, with many times an improvement from those set in the summer against Canford and Clayesmore. All the relay teams managed to beat their previous times by at least 3 seconds. Other notable performances were as follows: In the Junior 50m freestyle, Will Young was narrowly beaten but still managed to set a personal best of 30.83, in the Senior 50m Breaststroke, Callum Batten was beaten by only 0.6s to first place and on his Debut for the swimming team, Tom Everard managed 2nd place in the Junior 50m backstroke.

Football: 1ST XI v Sherborne International

This was a mixed team to match up with the visitors’ U16 side. The first half was dominated by a free flowing Sherborne side who were 4 -0 up. M.A had the better of the second half with a spirited performance, which brought them close to equalising the game, albeit thwarted by some last ditch defending by the opposition. Goals came from Jonathan Ellis and Angus Moreton.

Man of the Match: Angus Moreton

Golf v Sherborne

The team travelled to Sherborne Golf Club to play Sherborne B team.  The heat wave might have just finished but our golf was still extremely hot!  Our Captain, Will Stogdale played some inspired golf and with crucial support from Rupert Turnbull won a tightly fought match.  Our second pair, the Spanish dream team – Gonzalo Roca and Sergio Pujol burned up the course to win their match very comfortably indeed.  This meant that we recorded our first win over Sherborne in ten years – a tremendous achievement!

Rugby: U16 XV v Monkton Coombe

Milton Abbey U16s were unlucky not to get on the score sheet.  They had the lion’s share of possession and played well as a team.  Chris Well’s came closest to the line in the second half followed shortly by Alex Macauley.  The boys did well to keep their discipline in a very physical match played in very hot conditions.  Stand out performances by Joe Bain who slotted in seamlessly at scrum half and Henry Hughes who continues to tackle anything that moves.  George Hatchard also put in a good performance at open side flanker and Alex Macauley organised the backline well.  Despite the score line the team showed real desire and a greater cohesion than in their previous outing.

Rugby: U15B v Monkton Coombe

This was an unfortunate loss for us. However, the man of the match was Arnold Shum, who, for someone who's only played three weeks of rugby had a an excellent game as full back, saving Milton Abbey at least two definite and a few other potential tries.

The lack of commitment in the tackle let us down however, it is also an issue of size with the other team being bigger players on average. The Milton Abbey boys showed a tremendous sense of team spirit, never letting their heads drop. They were also praised by the opposition coach when at one point four of our team helped up an injured Monkton Coombe player from the floor. Lots to work on, but much to be proud of also.

Rugby: U14A v Monkton Coombe

Playing their second game of the season the U14A team showed much promise.  Having practised running patterns and putting together phases in attack in the week, the team were able to replicate their skills in a match situation.

Ben Warburton and Captain, Ed Doggrell had a fantastic match. Both players stood out in both attack and defence, working hard all over the pitch and making some fantastic tackles. Hugo Hunt at Fly half worked very hard to get his back line running, or ran the ball himself.

Girls' Hockey v Sherborne Girls

An unseasonably hot late September day with temperatures in the mid 20’s meant the girls stamina was sorely tried. However, it was the same for both teams and in a match where we had more shots on goal than they did, it was frustrating to only score twice. Despite this, it was a good first outing for Milton Abbey girls who ended the match with a draw, leaving us feeling positive about the term ahead, and with lots to work on in training. Fran Barron was awarded Player of the Match for her tenacity in defence.

Football: 1st XI v Warminster

The 1st XI played Warminster school on Thursday 29th September and but unfortunately lost 5 – 0 to a stronger side. The game was more even than the score line suggests and Milton Abbey had numerous first half chances which the forwards squandered. Joe Bain was very influential throughout and was man of the match.

Sailing v Sherborne

An idyllic sea breeze prevailed for the second match of the winter series of fixtures for the junior sailors in their match against Sherborne last Thursday. This proved to be a very closely fought event. In the first race the Milton Abbey team, captain by Otto Allwood, managed to just win by coming over the finish line in second, third and fourth positions. In the second race it was the Sherborne team who managed first, second and sixth positions. The overall result was that Sherborne won the series just by just two points.

Also that the afternoon, amidst the current Indian summer, several of the new members, both boys and girls enjoyed a circumnavigation of the harbour via Castle Cove in the Wayfarers.

Rugby: 2nd XV v Sherborne

On Tuesday 27th September, the 2XV played against Sherborne and won 17-10.  The try scorers are Ned Chattey, Gus Rouse and Hugo Cordle. Man of the match is Will Ferreira for his relentless effort in tackling the opposition.  Thank you to the few U16 who helped securing a victory.

Rugby: U15B v Sherborne

A disappointing start to the season in terms of a fifty-odd point defeat, but out try in the final play of the game was not only our half time aim but also showed that we are able to convert possession into points when we apply ourselves correctly.

Man of the match goes to the debutant for not only Milton Abbey, but also the sport of rugby, Cristobal Weiechert, for showing fabulous awareness, great strength and 110% commitment.

Rugby: U14A v Sherborne.

Playing their first match of the season the U14  XV came away with a fought out victory 20-7.

Players who deserve special mention, Ben Warburton who tackled and worked tirelessly around the pitch and scored two tries. Ed Doggrell made tackle after tackle.  Half backs of Ed Barrington and Hugo Hunt, who were playing out of their preferred position linked well an attacked at every opportunity.  George Chitty made a strong debut on the wing.  In the centre Vincent Ruppert tackled well and made great ground with the ball.

Football: 1st XI v Canford

Despite a valiant effort we lost this game 5 – 0. Most of the first half was even but M.A didn’t convert their chances. Once again, superb work rate from Ewan Wright who never gave up. Canford maintained better possession and we were beaten by a better side on the day.

Sailing v Thornlow Prep

Last Thursday saw the first of the Autumn series of races held at the Olympic Sailing Academy.

The junior sailing team captained by Otto Allwood had to cope with light and fluky wind conditions in their match against Thornlow Prep. In both races held in Laser Picos, Milton Abbey came in first, second and fourth positions. Many congratulations to Otto Allwood, George Webb, Rory Thomson, James Morrison, Charles Nainby-Luxmoore and Cameron Harford for their fine performances.
