School Play – The Resistible Rise of Arturo
The Drama department of Milton Abbey School are delighted to be performing ‘The Resistible Rise of Arturo’ by Bertolt Brecht as this year’s main school production.
The play was written in 1941 and was designed as a parody of the rise of Hitler. The play charts the rise of a man who is prepared to walk over anyone to achieve his aims, which are quite simply to gain control of the thoughts, minds and money of the people. To stand in his way means death. In Brecht’s play we watch how the Cauliflower sellers are manipulated, coerced and forced in to giving in to Ui’s demands. Can this sort of thing still be going on today? The play is set in North African desert and reflects some of the recent troubles there. The cast explore the possibility of a man who has the fire power, the evil sidekicks and an overwhelming desire to take over. In this context, the violent mobster envisaged by Brecht translates with alarming ease to the militarised forces of contemporary global capitalism.
Performances start on Thursday, 1st December at 7.30pm with subsequent performances on Friday, 2nd at 7.30pm and Saturday, 3rd at 8.00pm. For further information please contact the School Reception on 01258 880484.
