Milton Abbey Activities

Activities

At Milton Abbey, we pride ourselves on our wide range of sports and activities, and on providing opportunities to discover new skills and to develop old ones. The extraordinary facilities, from a purpose built theatre, a recently upgraded Music School and venues for the creative arts that include the beautiful Abbey, allow pupils to develop their talents and express them fully.

On the sports field, as well as the traditional 'main' sports each term of rugby, hockey and cricket, we also like our football, cross-country; athletics; golf (on our own course)and tennis - not to mention our sailing at the Olympic base at Portland.

With outdoor pursuits, we challenge our pupils with a whole gamut of activities, including CCF, where we have a the three services equally represented, Duke of Edinburgh silver and gold expeditions, the annual Ten Tors challenge, and weekend abseiling, climbing, caving and kayaking. Within the grounds, the school also has one of the largest Confidence Courses in the South of the country, popular with many of our pupils.

The school wholeheartedly embraces its country location. Pupils can be found working on the school farm, looking after livestock, developing the school pheasant shoot, ferreting and, most recently, supporting the local beagle pack. Our school stables, where we can house seven horses, enables pupils to keep their animals at school, and exercise them around the parkland and surrounding countryside.

Clubs and activities time provides opportunities to sing in the Abbey Choir, or play a musical instrument, where pupils play with any number of the school bands or groups. The regular year group – and whole school – productions provide opportunity for pupils to demonstrate and develop dramatic skills – a number of Old Miltonians have gone on to follow successful careers in the acting world.

Far from parochial, Milton Abbey organises trips abroad, ranging from the upcoming Football Club tour to AC Milan, an annual skiing trip, two regular language trips to France, an expedition to the First World War battlefields, a regular trip to South Africa and numerous other sports tours. The final silver DofE expeditions include cycling in Holland and walking in France.

In summary, we believe what happens outside the classroom is crucial to pupils' personal development, and at Milton Abbey we are committed to providing every opportunity for that growth to take place. Ultimately, when it comes to activities, we want Miltonians to challenge themselves at every level.
