MA in the Future
Milton Abbey is delighted to announce the introduction of full co-education, the building of three new boarding houses and the increase of the school’s capacity to 300, enabling it to compete at the highest level in all areas.
Co-education
It is the firm belief of the Headmaster and Governors that Milton Abbey should be open to everybody. The sixth form has benefited hugely from the introduction of girls five years ago, and with numbers looking extremely healthy, growing over the coming year, it is the right time to make such an exciting move. We are therefore proud to announce that Milton Abbey will become fully co-educational from September 2012, giving us time to prepare for our first intake of third form girls and develop our facilities to ensure equal opportunities for boys and girls at the school.
Boarding Provision
To ensure our accommodation is the best available, we need to build separate boarding houses, each with a resident housemaster, an assistant resident housemaster and a resident tutor. Each house will have its own common rooms, TV rooms, boot rooms, kitchens and other facilities. Resident housemasters will be supported by two matrons, working morning and afternoon/evening shifts. Each house will accommodate 60 pupils, and every sixth former will have his or her own individual study bedroom.
To that end Milton Abbey is planning to build three new boarding houses and renovate our present accommodation to create two other houses, therefore totalling five houses. These will be configured as follows:
- Three houses situated along the drive, utilising present staff accommodation and the Maintenance Department, with new buildings behind incorporating resident housemasters and resident tutors.
- Converting the Maillard Wing (where Hambro, Athelstan, Tregonwell and the sixth form areas of Bancks are at present) into one boarding house, utilising the extension beyond the glass stairs as a resident housemaster’s house, and incorporating a resident assistant housemaster and a resident tutor.
- Linking the staff accommodation at the entrance to the back quad onto the Medical Centre, extending Middleton House to create a new third form to middle sixth form girls’ boarding house with a resident housemaster, resident assistant housemaster and resident tutor.
Detailed plans are displayed in the Visitors Drawing Room at school; however you may download our Development Brochure, the proposed site plan and artists impressions below.
Increase in school roll to 300
The growth in numbers to no more than 300 pupils will enable Milton Abbey to be far more competitive on the sports field, encourage pupils to not just play hard, but develop in confidence to win, as well as increasing our music ensemble capabilities and produce ambitious drama productions whilst preserving and utilising our size and ability to care for every individual.
‘Educating not just teaching’ campaign
Without doubt the most significant development in Milton Abbey’s sixty year history, the plans have been made a reality as a result of the current fundraising appeal through the generosity of former pupils and former and current parents. Having raised over £800,000 to date, our realistic target of £1.5 million will be achieved over the coming months.
