Sports Results Week 5

A round-up of sports results from week 5 of the Summer Term by Mr Lawes, Head of Sport.

Cricket

2nd XI v Canford – lost by 6 wickets
A strong Canford team restricted the Abbey batsmen to a modest total. James W batted well and Vlad hit a couple of delightful boundaries. Although Canford knocked the runs off in good time they were made to work hard by some good fielding and bowling. Harry and James were the pick of the bowlers with James picking up the Man of the Match award for his all-round performance.

U15 v Poole – lost by 28 runs
Milton Abbey did not bowl or field as well as they could have, and a number of the Poole batsmen made impressive starts. Only Max P and Ibrahim J could really stem the flow of runs. Chasing 158, Milton Abbey needed some good partnerships, and Dan E and Max P provided this, scoring 43 and 54 respectively. Dan’s average is now 46 and Max’s is 94! Time for the rest of the team to step up!

U14 v Poole – lost by 51
Poole scored 161 thanks mainly to a fantastic innings by their opener. In reply we looked on course at times but soft wickets cost us and we fell short. Harry and Joe were awarded jointly as Man of the Match and were both on good form with bat but needed to go on and get a big score.

1st XI v Milton Abbey Association
The 1st XI had a great game against the MAA. The MAA won the toss and elected to field. Angus stepped up to open the batting and scored a well-constructed 25. The rest of the boys added to the score but only Harry was able to make more than a start, top scoring with 26.

In response the MAA openers scored quickly and got off to a flying start. Archie, Will and Harry all bowled well but it was Stephen's safe hands and Tom's exceptional death bowling that secured the boys the win.

Tennis

After a slow start to the season the Senior Boys’ Team are starting to build up a head of steam. On Thursday they beat Bryanston and then on Saturday beat Clayesmore. The Benson brothers started slowly but looked really solid once warmed up. Matteo and Denis also had another great day and played some top quality tennis. Zavi and Josh both contributed to the match with a vital point and pushed all their opponents hard. Two great wins.

In the junior match against Clayesmore, George and Will played really well to win two of their three matches. Henry and Cameron fought hard for their three matches and although unable to claim a win they pushed their opponents all the way, had some great points and are really improving. A narrow loss.

3rd Form Inter House - Road to Wimbledon Tennis Tournament

Taking place on Sunday a slow start developed into a fantastic final. 16 boys took to the courts with Joe E, Max J, Bryn W and Harry S making the semi-finals.

Harry and Joe won their respective matches to meet in the final. Joe led the way but Harry's superb technique kept Joe under pressure throughout.  A 12 shot rally saw Joe create a match point which he put away to finish 4-1 up. A brilliant Damer v Hambro Final.  Well done to Joe who can now progress to the county final.
