Sports Results - Week 2

A round-up of sports results from week 2 of the Summer Term by Ben Lawes, Head of Sport.

Cricket

U15 v Thomas Hardye – lost by 6 wickets
Despite a really positive batting performance, THS had a stronger overall game and ran out comfortable winners.  70 not out from Max was the cornerstone of a competitive 155 total. Max carried his bat maintaining an excellent tempo to the innings.  However Milton Abbey were poor in the field, and when THS unleashed their own big hitters we could not contain them. Much to work on in practice this week.

U14 v Thomas Hardye – lost by 20 runs
A much improved fielding and bowling performance restricted the opposition to 118. We then found batting much more difficult than against Warminster and were bowled out for 98. We bowled 50 extras compared to THS's 24 and 9 of our batsman were clean bowled. The areas of focus this week are therefore quite clear. The stand out performer was Harry who scored 22 with the bat and was our most economical bowler.

Tennis

The senior girls had an impressive start to the season. Amelia and Captain Sophie, put Leweston firmly in their place with 2 wins from 3 matches for our 1st pair. Another notable win was for Sophie and Annie. The overall match eventually swung in their favour. A great start following an impressive pre-season in Portugal.

Athletics

Last Saturday we enjoyed Sports Day. We had more people competing than ever before. There are clearly some great athletes at Milton Abbey and it’s great to see so many people give it their best effort.

Some highlights from the Junior Boys are as follows: Gabe winning the 200m by over 3 seconds, Marcus finishing 8 seconds ahead in the 800m and Max winning both the Shot and the Discus. Hambro took the overall win for the Junior Boys followed by Athelstan, Damer and Tregonwell.

In the Senior Boys’ competition special mention goes to Zavi for an excellent throw of 10m 36 in the shotput and Ralph for his performance in the 1500m. The highlight of this competition has to be the 100m with Will pipping Laurie by just one tenth of a second. Athelstan won the Senior Boys’ competition followed by Damer, Tregonwell and then Hambro.

The fight for top overall position came down to just 3 points with Hambro coming second on 226 points and Athelstan winning with 229.

In the girls’ competitions special mention must go to India in her performance in the Junior Girls' 100m and Fran for winning the 300m by a margin of more than 4 ½ seconds in a tough race. MacArthur won the Junior competition followed by Holmes and then Grainger. In the Senior competition Holmes came in as the winners followed by MacArthur and Grainger.

The overall leader board in the girls’ competition couldn't have been closer. Grainger came in 3rd and we have joint winners with MacArthur and Holmes both finishing on 69 points.

A big thank you to all the staff for their officiating and scoring and a special thanks to Miss Ogle and Mr Wilson for their organisation and hard work.
