Sports Reports - Week 12

A round-up of the sports results from week 12 of the Michaelmas Term, by Mr Lawes, Head of Sport.

Hockey

The 1st XI had a frustrating fixture away to Gillingham; a match that saw the Abbey dominate possession, yet lose 1-0.  Some fantastic link-up play led to some good chances but unfortunately we couldn’t find the goal. However, a really encouraging performance to take into our last game of the season.

The 2nd XI drew 1-1 with Clayesmore 3rds.  It was an excellent game to watch; we dominated for long periods but Clayesmore finished very strong. India scored a well worked goal for us. Daisy, Jess and Violet deserve particular mention as they had excellent games and well done to Ava for making a promising MA debut.

Rugby

A nervous U15s took to the pitch on Thursday with an unbeaten season only two games away. However three quick tries and two conversions by James soon settled any nerves.  MA’s dominance continued throughout with MA eventually winning 55-37. With just the Claysemore match remaining the team are one step closer to completing something quite remarkable but need to concentrate fully on the challenge ahead.

The 2nd XV had a close match with each team leading at times.  MA’s tacking was excellent but there were too many poor decisions that lead to MA being put under increasing pressure and cost us the win. However James’s running and Sam’s passing was strong. Our game management requires development if we are to finish strongly in the final match of the season against Clayesmore.

The 1st XV went toe to toe with Downside for a full 70 minutes.  We scored the first 11 points with some scintillating play by the backs and solid kicking from Stephen.  We were further ahead thanks to a superb break from Matteo a supported by Patrick and Will. However the larger Downside bench really showed in the end.  Final score 31-23.
