Sports Reports: Week 10

A round-up of the sports results from week 10 of the Michaelmas Term, by Mr Lawes, Director of Sport.

Rugby

The U14s started very well against West Buckland. They defended bravely and passed with skill and it led to two tries from Josh and Henry and a half time lead. Unfortunately in the second half the team’s fitness became an issue and West Buckland ran in a couple of easy tries to win the game. Man of the Match was George for his superb work. Josh also deserves a mention for his excellent ball carrying and leadership.

The U15s played some excellent rugby using the pace of men out wide to score some lovely tries. Gabriel’s strong running and unselfish distribution are welcome additions to the team.  Alex also played particularly well. We will have to improve on our body shape in contact if we are to remain unbeaten with challenging matches against Downside and Clayesmore to come.  The U15s won their games 24-0 and  17-0.

Despite excellent tries from Archie and Ed the 2nd XV were unable to overcome West Buckland on Saturday. MA put together several very good periods of play but lacked the consistency required win. George and Milo’s effort in the forwards was fantastic but lapses in defence let West Buckland score several simple tries. Milo was man of the match. Final score 31 – 12.

The 1st XV started brilliantly against Shebbear with some skilful offloading and passing. However we failed to make this count on the scoreboard and some loose defending cost us tries. We managed to drag one try back through Piers but this wasn’t enough, losing 15-7. The second match against West Buckland was very close. Tries from Zavi, Archie and Laurie saw us take the win 19-12. Man of the Match was Hugo who played his best game to date in a Milton Abbey shirt.

Hockey

The U15s had a good week beating Clayesmore Bs on Thursday and drawing with Downside on Saturday. India and Rose scored our goals on Thursday and the match against Downside was very close. Either team could have won. Felicity continues to impress in goal and Amie played well in defence. Lexi and Rose are really improving up front. Leila also deserves a mention for her improvement in recent weeks.

The 1st XI had a tough fixture against Downside that ended in a 4-0 loss. The Abbey had a poor first half that cost them the match. The second half was something to be very proud of however. Every single player showed great determination and energy, creating some good chances that unfortunately did not prevail. Lots of positives to take into our next fixture at home to Clayesmore.
