Sports Report: Week 3

A round-up of sports results from Week 3 of the Michaelmas Term by Mr Lawes, Head of Sport.

Sailing

vs Clayesmore - won
Milton Abbey dominated the regatta throughout, Charley led all of the races and was never seriously challenged however Ruby, Lucas and Harry also produced fine performances. It was good to see the less experienced sailors also complete all of the races in good times.

Rugby

1st vs Queens Taunton and Shebbear
Queens Taunton proved too strong in the first match of the triangular however the match against Shebbear was much closer; we eventually lost by 3 tries to 2. A slow start cost MA the match. There were some great carries by James and Matteo, with our 2 tries scored by Gabe and Ben. Stand out players from the day's rugby were Ben and Archie.

2nd vs Queens Taunton - lost
Queens were an extremely well drilled team. MA’s forwards put in a lot of effort and competed in all areas, but the backs struggled to contain their very quick and skilful opponents. The scoring started early and continued throughout as queens were just too fast. MA fought hard throughout and showed great heart to score their sole try in the last minute.

U15s vs Queens Taunton and Shebbear
The U15s played some of their best Rugby of the season on Saturday. Most pleasing was the excellent attitude they maintained throughout their two challenging matches. Henry, Archie and Harry were exceptional. Felix and George had their best games for Milton Abbey to date. All the players can be proud of their performances.

U14s vs Queens Taunton - lost
Another close game for the U14's but this was another really positive step forward in the team’s development. We defended with better shape and were a constant threat in attack. We finished the match without 3 of our starting 15. The result really could have been very different against a much larger school.

Badminton

vs Warminster – lost
The badminton squad has clearly improved since their first match. Although they lost overall they enjoyed some fine victories in both the singles and doubles. Timur and Steve had fantastic meets whilst Danny, George, Will and Oscar have all really improved. Extremely well done.

Swimming

vs Warminster – won
MA dominated the races winning the meet comfortably. Highlights included John and Emray 50m free style battle with John narrowly edging out Emray in a time of 28.41. Strong performances also came from Roo, Alec and Jason who all broke the 15 second mark for the 25m freestyle event.

Football

vs Downside – lost 5-3
The team has progressed well since their first match. In the first 20 minutes, MA was the strongest team and it was not long before AaRon scored twice. Unfortunately, we started to lose our concentration and allowed Downside to score 3 goals. Harry then equalised before Downside finished stronger to win a thrilling match. Men of the match are Din and Finley who played really well in defence.

Hockey

1st vs Warminster – won 3-1
Team of the week was certainly the 1st XI girls who came away with a fine 3-1 winners against a tough Warminster team. Goals from Becca, Amelia and debutant Louise capped off a fine afternoon. Down the other end of the pitch Fran made some vital saves to keep the Abbey in front, with Tallulah and Rosie passing well out of defence. Player of the match was Becca with a fine captains performance.

2nd vs Warminster – lost 4-0
The 2nds had a fantastic match against Warminster. It was a close match with loads of effort from both sides. We had lots of chances but couldn’t find the net whilst Warminster put their chances in and had a bit of luck. Laura, Ava and India demonstrated great skill in the midfield. Amelie and Bobbie played great in defence. Mrs Stoot was very proud of our girls who never gave up.

U16s – Ballard Tournament – 5th out of 10
MA had a great day at Ballard with some outstanding performances. Their best performance came against Kind Edwards, Southampton. Against a much larger school they dominated the play to win 1-0 and secure a final position of 5th. Zara and Louise showed good strength on the ball, with Violet and India providing great attacking threat. Amie also scored her first ever MA goal.

U15s vs Warminster – lost 3-0
The U15s gave it their best all game but were up against a more experienced side. Warminster scored twice early and the girls showed great determination to only concede one more. Eve made some great saves in goal and Lily and Fleur impressed in defence. We certainly missed Bubble in our midfield.

Golf

vs Warminster - draw
On Saturday we took on Warminster in another friendly match. Oli and Jake both tried their best, but were on the unfortunate end of Warminster playing exceptionally well and as a result we lost the opening game. Hugo and Oscar therefore knew they needed to win their match, both played well winning with a few holes to go and secured the draw for the team.
