Sports Report: Week 2

A round-up of sports results from Week 2 of the Michaelmas Term by Mr Lawes, Head of Sport.

Hockey

1st XI vs Monkton Combe - Lost 3-0
The first game of the season started with a trip to Monkton.  A tough opening game that resulted in a 3-0 loss.  A debut game in the firsts for Felicity saw her come away as 'player of the match', with several high class saves.  Annie, Amelia and debutants Violet and Lucia put in a lot of running up front, but couldn't find the back of the net.  Becca had a good game as captain.  Warminster up next.

2nd XI vs Monkton Combe - Lost 3-0
MA's first ever girls' second XI lost in a highly competitive game with plenty of chances at both ends of the pitch.  India played well in the middle picking up 'player of the match'.  Other notable mentions go to Laura, Lydia and Captain Issy for their tireless work.  Plenty of positives to build on and lots of potential for the season ahead.

U15s vs Monkton Combe - Won 6-1
A great start to the season and an excellent team performance.  Louise, Zara and Bubble were fantastic in midfield with Louise scoring a fine hat trick on her MA debut.  However it was the performance of the less experienced hockey players that was most pleasing.  Rowena scored two in her first ever out field match and Maria and Patricia played well.  Well done girls.

Sailing

With roughly 55,000 participants across the globe, the Bart's Bash 2017 wasn't a race to miss.  We were on the start line with World Champions and Olympic Sailors.  The MA sailors raced well with Harry and Hugo both in the top half of their classes.  Charlie and Lucas had a few run-ins with smaller boats before crossing the finishing line,  The global results are to be released in the next few weeks.

Rugby

U14s vs Rendcomb - won 48-5 and vs Hampshire Collegiate - lost 21-24
After a comfortable win against Rendcomb on Thursday the under 14s travelled to Hampshire Collegiate on Saturday to play a fantastic match that went right down to the final whistle.  MA scored twice through Issac and James C however HCS took a 10 point lead into the final minutes.  Issac scored and James W converted.  Issac was then stopped metres short of the try line in the dying seconds!  A great game.

Big congratulations to Gabe Goss for his selection to the England U16 squad.  It is a fantastic achievement with very few people ever getting the chance to represent their country.  We wish him the best of luck in his training camp at the end of the month and upcoming match against France.

Cycling

With the season drawing to a close, the cycling team entered the 'New Forest 100' looking to maintain their 100% gold rating success rate for the year.  And achieve it they did, completing the 60 miles in a shade over 3 hours and 20 minutes.  It was by far the best performance of the season.  Notable mention goes to Angus who achieved a gold rating in his very first race.
