Ben Ainslie Racing (BAR) Land Rover Trip

Design and Technology is a subject that gives our pupils the opportunity to combine practical and technological skills with creative thinking, designing and making real and useful products.

The America's Cup is the most prestigious sailing event in the world and the designers of the boats use cutting edge materials and innovative designs to get an edge.  The Sixth Form Design and Technology pupils teamed up with Physics pupils and Sailing Scholars to visit the headquarters of BAR Land Rover in Portsmouth, which was conceived by four times Olympic gold medallist Sir Ben Ainslie with the aim of ensuring Britain is in the best possible position to challenge for the America’s Cup.  The BAR Land Rover team is made up of some of the best British and international sailors, designers, builders and racing support.   They enjoyed a day at their education centre  which offered a unique behind-the-scenes experience with hands-on interactive experiences.  Pupils were able to learn about the many challenges that the team faces in designing, building and racing in the America’s Cup, as well as the role science and technology play in designing boats.
