3D Design trip to Mini plant in Oxford

Milton Abbey's Lower Sixth Form 3D Design pupils enjoyed a fascinating trip to the BMW Mini plant in Oxford yesterday.

The trip included a behind-the-scenes guided tour around Mini's body shop and assembly line, where the group could see the car taking shape through the different stages of production.  The amount of technology present within the factory was fascinating with over 1000 robots hard at work manufacturing Minis to individual customer specifications, sparking a number of debates within the group about the replacement of humans with robots in the manufacturing industry.

Throughout the tour, pupils were able to appreciate the importance of the design process at the manufacturing stage, and they also gained an insight into how both the design and production allowed for a sustainable and ergonomic product for both the worker and the consumer.
